The Institute of Biology and Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development will hold the “Training Course on Application of Cell and Molecular Biology for Teaching and Research on Inland Aquatic Resources” on November 7-10, 2014 in Institute of Biology Building, National Science Complex, UP Diliman. The training course aims to promote cell and molecular techniques and train individuals from academic, research, and aquaculture industries in the Philippines who will apply the different technologies. By the end of the training course, the participants are expected to acquire the basic and advanced knowledge on cell and molecular biology techniques including their applications on aquatic research; skills in immunological and proteomic studies, gene expression analysis, handling and processing of molecular data; and experience in developing concept proposals for possible research projects employing cell and molecular biology tools. Effective the 2nd semester, S.Y. 2014-2015, one of the requirements for admission to the PhD in Biology by Research program, is hereby revised. This requirement, under Part I Section D, is to read as follows:

"...D. At least one article, published within the last five (5) years, in a highly reputable journal (e.g., Scopus- or Thomson Reuters indexed) in which the applicant is the primary author..."

All other requirements remain as is.

Congratulations to Dr Ian Kendrich C. Fontanilla for being awarded by the National Academy of Sciences and Technology as 2014 Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of Genetics and for being a 2014 Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize awardee!

Congratulations to Dr. Windell L. Rivera and Kris Genelyn B. Dimasuay for being selected as CHED 2014 Republica Award National Winner for the Natural Sciences for their paper titled “Molecular Characterization of Trichomonads Isolated from Animal Hosts in the Philippines.”

Dr. Windell L. Rivera was inducted as the President of the Board of Directors for FY 2014-2015 during the PSM's (Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc) 43rd Annual Convention held on May 15-16, 2014 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cebu City. Dr. Rivera was also inducted as one of the Council of Regents for the PAM (Philippine Academy of Microbiolgy) Council. Also, Dr. Pierangeli G. Vital was elected as Corresponding Secretary and Ma. Angela Dimasupil as Environmental Microbiology Division Representative of the PSM Board of Directors.
